Binding?

A bind is a technique for getting a yo-yo to come back that is designed not to. If you've seen footage of a yo-yo contest freestyle, you might be wondering how the player gets the yo-yo to spin so long without coming back (Here's a good example). No matter how much tugging or slack there is on the string, it doesn't come back until he's ready for it. That's because his yo-yo is designed to be less responsive, so he can perform longer tricks. At the end of the trick, when the player wants the yo-yo to come back, he performs a special technique, called a Bind.

There are many reasons players decide to use non-responsive yo-yos. They'll spin many times longer than a regular yo-yo, so you can perform longer and more complicated tricks. For competitive players, you can imagine this is pretty important.

So, is it necessary to learn how to bind? Not entirely, but as you get better it'll become more important to learn. So, you don't have to learn how to bind until you're ready for it.

So let's give it a try!

It's best to practice with a low-response or zero response butterfly shape yo-yo. Our instructions are for right-handed players, so if you throw left-handed, just invert the video or something.

The Easiest Binding Technique

This technique comes from a front throw into a long sleeper. This is the simplest way to bind. Watch carefully:

Lets look at it step by step. After throwing the long sleeper, take your free hand and grab the string as you see below:

Raise your left hand, dropping your right hand down

Land the yo-yo on the string

Bring your hands to roughly the same level

Use your left thumb and forefinger to pinch the string.

Now here's the important part: Keeping the string pinched, pull your right hand up and back, and lover your left hand toward the yo-yo. The string will catch on itself and bring the yo-yo back to your hand.

The first time you try this, it will be a mystery, but the more you practice, the more comfortable you will get binding the yo-yo.
